Installing Tweak UI

The use of Tweak UI ( Tweak User Interface from Microsoft ) is a free download and works with all 32 bit versions of Windows ( Windows 95/98/98se/NT4/2000/ME/XP ) but it is not a straight forward install for most. tweak1.jpg It allows for several default changes to be made by the user of Windows to the Windows system enviroment such as clearning history on boot ups or removal of the arrows on the desktop icons or several other additions that would take too long to go into hear. It is pretty safe and has a restore defaults button so even new Windows users should not have too big a problem with use of the software if they can figure out where to find it and how to install it. So here is where and how to get this useful little add on for Windows.

The download page link is at :

Windows 95/98/NT/2000/ME:
www.microsoft.com/ntworkstation/downloads/PowerToys/Networking/NTTweakUI.asp

For Windows XP :
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

Both are from the Microsoft website. The download for the Win 95/98/NT/2000/ME version is a very quick download. Follow the install instructions on the version you require as per the directions found there. Save this download to a folder on your system that you can get back to such as My Documents or My Downloads. You can use this version on XP systems also but the XP version has a few more additions for XP users and also has an install interface. As far as I know the XP version is for the XP version only but it may work with Win2k. If you do choose to use the XP version on Win2k you are doing so at your own risk.
The XP Tweak UI page above includes serveral add ons to the XP OS that may be useful. See the XP page for details on each of them... Most install using standard install interfaces.

Once you download the program you can close your browser connection and like all software installs it is a good idea to close all running applications so that if a file needs to be updated it can be. ( opened files on Windows generally cannot be updated by programs that did not open them ) Start My Computer or Windows Explorer and go to the folder you downloaded the TweakUI file to. In the case of TweakUI it is a self extracting zip file so once you click on it it will ask you were you wish to extract this file to. I generally suggest you enter C:\tweakui for a folder. Then once you have extracted it to that folder you can browse to it using Windows Explorer or My Computer then find the tweakui.inf file of the 4 files in that folder. Right click on that file and select the install option show on that option menu. This will install TweakUI on your system.

To start using Tweak UI you will find a new icon in the control panel on your system titled TweakUI and it will have the options to adjust your interface in that section. If you find TweakUI is not what you want, you can remove it from the Add/Remove programs in the control panel. If you are pressed for disk storage I believe you can remove the c:\tweak folder as I do not believe it is needed to run the program and is used just during installation.
