Fixes for commonly seen problems. |
| back |
| The purpose for this page is a referrence for some
fixes to common problems. I know the entire page is basicly that,
however these are too small a fix to really make pages over so I have
decided to lump them onto one page for this site. Now that you are
confused enough here goes. PM Bombs on Yahoo Messenger.
In most cases you can limit your exposure to PM Bombs by setting your Privacy settings in Yahoo Messenger to Friends Only. ( Login, Privacy check allow only people on my friends list to contact me ) Also some PM Bombs have shown up as hidden files in some cases so you may not be able to see the files unless you make sure to show details on the folder properties and/or set your folder options to allow you to see system and hidden files. Fixing broken Applets
Applets are usually embeded into webpage contents. It is important that you only download and run content you are fairly sure is safe, and even then it is not a bad idea to run virus scans in real time modes to prevent virus content from being included in any of these types of downloads. Checking Connected Streams/Threads
Installing Internet Explorer Virtual Machine ( current should be 5.00.3809 in most cases )
You should check for updates to Virtual Machine any time you see to be seeing many JAVA errors or lock ups on your system when you encounter JAVA applets. You should also make sure you keep up with other security updates for your version of Internet Explorer as JAVA scripts/applets can be written to do damage or produce security risks to your system. You would attempt to keep up with the updates at MS Technet Security Alert for VM MS-02-069 ( 12-11-2002 ) Windows - Browser Associations. One of the more common problems see is browser associations with files. Generally this is a result of something like installing a trial AOL CD or something and then finding your browser will not work correctly to open files. The reason for this is typically the file extention is no longer associated with the program that is needed to open it. Generally there are a few possible ways to attempt to fix this depending on the browser in question. Well simple is often best, and if you can download and install a small program, chances are this will fix many of the browser association problems seen. www.pc-tools.net(main page) offers this small program (stbrws14.exe) (download page ) to fix the problem. I have tried it personally but I did not have any browser association problem to start with. It is available at the link above. I think it is the 3rd choice down on that link. Save it to a folder where you can find it, then run the EXE file and it will install like any other program does. It is a very small program and will allow you to toggle between browsers as you wish if it works for you as it is supposed to. Choice 2 - To make the following browser the default: Internet Explorer Exit browser dependant programs like Yahoo Messenger and get offline. Open the Internet Explorer browser and if it attempts to log into the internet select work offline. Click on the TOOLS - then - INTERNET OPTIONS - then - PROGRAMS and put a check where it says for Internet Explorer should ask if it is the default browser. Click Apply then close, then close the Internet Explorer fully. When you restart Internet Explorer is should ask if you wish for it to be your default browser, select Yes and it should fix the problem in most cases. Netscape The best reference to fix this is to use their page at: http://wp.netscape.com/browsers/ using/ieusers/start/default.html for information and step by step instructions. Im most cases these will fix the problem. If you notice that a given file type is opening with another browser, you may wish to also look at the folder options in the control panel if you are sure you know what file extention needs to be associated with which program. I would however caution many to change the associations if they are unsure of the program required as it can even stop Windows from operating if you are totally wrong. You may also wish to look at browser security levels, firewall settings, and if you are using a filter that blocks a given IP address range. All these factors can prevent a given website from displaying as well. Still no luck? Try this information.Additional Profile Fix Internet Explorer Repair Tool Note for Windows XP users! This is a fix for a problem which is seen in some cases with AMD Athlon processors on systems that have AGP slot video cards. It requires a registry edit, so it is not for the beginner but it helped fix a problem I noticed personally on my system. For details on this fix, you will have to visit this page: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=231 which will include some details and graphics on how to do this. I would not recommend this fix for the new user. If you do undertake this fix, you may wish to do the following prior to starting.
Windows Registry One of the things normally seen with Windows systems is a slow down after a few months of operation. Your once quick fast Windows has slowed down to the point you are considering upgrading hardware to get the speed back. Well this may not be the fix you wish to try first. You may wish to considera Windows Registry cleanup or cleaner program. I am going to assume that you have already done the usual clean up and mantanance such as cleaned stored offline content, the recycle bin files, and done the scan disk and defragment as needed. If you have not, you may wish to look at NhyrvanasScandisk Page and NhyrvanasDefrag Page before you proceed. Few however venture into the Windows Registry cleaning. Typically I have seen about a 20% speed increase from doing a registry clean on a system that has not had it cleaned before. The most amazing thing is that more do not clean them. I will also mention that the Windows systems I have cleaned with such have also been far more crash resistant. Not bragging but I can go several days without rebooting Windows 98 and Windows 2000 I cannot recall the last time I have been forced to reboot it. I lay much of the credit to this to having a clean registry. I recommend a freeware program for most people who wish to clean their registry. EasyCleaner ( http://www.toniarts.com/ecleane.htm ) I have found to be a good cleaner which works on most any version of Windows. You should take care to read the instructions carefully if you plan on using it on Windows ME and XP with the roll back features however. On Windows 95 - 98 - NT - 2000 as far as I can see it is really pretty simple as you just follow the on screen prompts. I would advise a bit more caution as far as the clean up of the files and drives with the software but even that is pretty much proceed carefully the first few times and then you should have no problem using it. To Disable System Restore on XP and ME: Left Click on Start on the desktop, select Programs or All Programs, depending on the desktop settings, then click on Accessories, then System Tools, then System Restore. At this point a box should open that says Welcome to System Restore. Click on the System Restore Settings on the left side of the box. This should open yet another box and under the System Restore Tab, there is a check box to turn off System Restore on all drives. Check this box, to disable to restore feature for virus removal. After you have completed your virus removal, you can repeat the procedure already mentioned and remove the check from the box and it should return the system restore to operation. Windows Product Key Recovery Lost your product key? Need to recover it? Well assuming you have not reformated or otherwise messed up windows so badly you cannot get it to run, here is how to locate the product key you were using the last time...
File Associations If you get the message that there is no program associated with this type of file or you keep getting an error when you try to open a given file type, say for example ZIP files, you likely have a file association problem. This is usually fixed by either reinstalling the software/program used to normally open the type of file you are requesting or if you know the type of file it is and what program it should be opened with you can fix the problem manually in most cases like this.
CARE SHOULD BE TAKEN WHEN CHANGING ASSOCIATIONS !!! In some cases poor choices may result in Windows no longer working!!! If you are unsure about making such changes, it is better to reinstall a program than to manually change file associations. Windows98/98SE VXD Bug Fix In several versions of Windows 98/98se there is a bug on the installation that fails to copy 7 VXD files. The results are lockups, blue error screens, mouse lock ups and problems shutting Windows down. In many cases this small download will fix the problem. VXD_FIX.zip - 17kb NOTE!!! - This is for Windows 98 and Windows 98SE ONLY!!! File contents are zipped - you will need a zip utility to extra them. MSCONFIG Information for Win9x, XP users. ( Win 2k does not have MSCONFIG ) StartUp Control Panel Download ( start up control panel that will work for all versions of Windows including Win2k )
